It is a truth universally acknowledged that a Sunday evening must be in want of a period drama

As we have come to the end of Poldark Series Four, let us comfort ourselves with the thought of forthcoming period dramas which will be a balm to our souls.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, is out on Netflix in the US as of Friday 10th August 2018 and on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK on 27th August 2018. If you missed this at the cinema (or aren’t in the UK where this was released) then it is well worth watching. In fact, even if you did see it in the cinema it is well worth watching. The book is brilliant and this adaptation is fairly faithful, beautifully shot (ironically on location in Devon and Cornwall not Guernsey!) and just wonderful for the soul. This story set in the aftermath of WWII in 1940s, follows the current darling of period drama, Lily James, from blitzed London to Guernsey, where she has been corresponding with a book group. It has flashbacks to the German occupation of the Channel Islands and is a wonderful story of hope, despair, love, loyalty and humour in adversity. It has a great ensemble cast (mainly poached from Downton Abbey) including Penelope Wilton, Matthew Goode, Jessica Brown-Findlay and Katherine Parkinson and stars James and Michael Huisman.
